From calling to commitment: Long School of Medicine welcomes the next generation of physician leaders
The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine welcomed 234 incoming medical students during its annual White Coat Ceremony, marking the beginning of their journey toward becoming physicians and reaffirming the school's commitment to educating compassionate, patient-centered leaders in medicine.
The White Coat Ceremony is a significant milestone for every medical student, symbolizing the transition into the medical profession and the responsibility that comes with caring for patients. Surrounded by family, friends, faculty and mentors, the Class of 2030 received their first white coats and recited the Physician鈥檚 Oath of Hippocrates that reflects their commitment to ethical, compassionate care.
During the ceremony, UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy, PhD, encouraged the newest members of the medical community to embrace the responsibility of their chosen profession.
"As the newest members of the medical community, you now carry the honor and privilege of living out your calling to lead with both excellence and compassion. I have full faith you will achieve both, marking a very bright future for each of you and for our community at large."
Dean Robert A. Hromas, MD, FACP, reflected on the qualities that distinguish exceptional physicians, reminding students of the impact their education can have on future patients.
鈥淗ave enough wisdom to always be careful when making decisions that affect the lives of your patients, no matter how many times you have done it before. Start learning medicine from the inside out first, learn the heart of healing before learning healing itself, and you will do well as a physician.鈥
The ceremony celebrated not only the academic achievements that brought these students to the Long School of Medicine but also the values they will carry throughout their careers. As they begin their medical education, the members of the Class of 2030 join a community dedicated to advancing medicine through innovation, discovery and compassionate patient care, while preparing to serve the health needs of South Texas and beyond.
